Program Levels

LEVEL 1: Basic Handgun Orientation

This course is designed for those that are either new to the concepts of handguns, or don’t believe that they have obtained enough knowledge to consider themselves safe with a firearm. Topics covered include:

  • Video Handgun Fundamentals & Marksmanship

Feel free to bring your cased and unloaded handgun if you have one. We will show you how to safely load, fire and unload your handgun using non-firing dummy rounds. However, you do not need to own a handgun for this class. Call for details. Look at our schedule or call us to set up an appointment.

LEVEL 2: Basic CPL Safety Training

This course is required by the State of Michigan for all CCW/CPL applicants. Minimum of 5 hours of classroom and 3 hours of range time are included. The following topics will be covered in this course:

This course meets and exceeds the training requirement for Concealed Pistol License (CPL) applicants in Michigan (and most states). This course is designed to develop the student’s basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen’s right to self-defense.
This course also covers defensive shooting, basic defensive handgun skills, firearms and the law including:

  • Possession
  • Ownership
  • Use of deadly force
  • Strategies for Home Safety & Defense
  • Responding to a Violent Confrontation
  • Selecting a Handgun for Personal Protection

A Basic Firearm Safety Course Certificate is required as a pre-requisite. This course covers the strategies and defenses involved in a real life armed confrontation. It will cover:

  • Ten Defensive Shooting Positions
  • Four Step Holster Draw
  • Protection from Attackers
  • Protection from Multiple Attackers
  • Stress and Quick Reloading

Skills will be refined by the use of moving targets and target drills for stopping potentially life threatening encounters. Includes 3 D Targets and Steel Dueling Tree.

LEVEL 4: Steel Challenge

Steel Challenge is an opportunity to shoot with special frangible ammunition at reactive steel targets. This class provides practice in the tactical employment of the handgun. Completion of a CCW/CPL class with copy of certificate is required. To our knowledge, we are the only training academy that offers and owns this type of steel target which allows you to shoot indoors, upclose, safely and in a climate controlled range. Focus is placed on the practical use of the defensive handgun. You will learn defensive shooting positions:

  • Standing
  • Kneeling
  • One hand strong
  • Support hand
  • Shooting around barricades
  • Shooting behind cover
  • Stress and quick reloading

You will also learn the four step draws for holster drills and learn what your body goes through when you are faced with a life threatening situation.
