I have a cousin in Traverse City also interested in taking the class with me. Do you do lessons on Saturdays? I had a great experience at ultimate protection academy…I let my CPL expire by one year and four months..so I had to retake the course. I first took a “course” at peters indoor gun range… we had 50+ ppl in our class with minimal hands on training besides the 2 magazines we got to put down range…..Not at ultimate protection academy we had 12 ppl in our class it felt very personal and hands on between the live fire exercises,dummy rounds and lazer simulator You really get the feeling that Mary and Allen cared that about to be carrying a firearm in public and may have to someday use it. I would defiantly recommend this course to first timers or renewals. Oh yeah there’s no commute between the range and the classroom it all takes place in the same building so that was a +

Good place to get your CPL License. They take their time and work with each individual to make sure every student inside the class understands the responsibility, the law, and skills for a Concealed Carry License. What impressed me the most is at the end of the training section, They won’t just take students to the range and let them shoot and pass them. They will evaluate each student in their accuracy, knowledge of how to safely operate a firearm, shooting is fast pace. Furthermore, they will not end the relationship with you after you have graduated from them. If any student has any problems about their CPL application, they will help you out with their knowledge and make sure you are on the right path.

I served in the Military Police Corps of the US Army and carried a loaded Colt .45 for 3 years. Having said that, I must also add, it has been 50 years since that time in the service. I went to their basic firearms instruction class and then to their CPL class with a complete open mindset and dutifully followed instructions of all the people on their staff. I learned all over again the fundamentals of gun safety and thoroughly enjoyed myself in the process. Things I had forgotten and things I remembered. Allen and Mary are very patient & knowledgeable and exceptionally good at what they do. To my surprise, half the class were women and Allen & Mary are geared for that. Highly recommend these classes for women. Education in the use of firearms is always an ongoing learning experience. I will return to take more classes and make use of their new range. I had a pretty bad introduction to shooting from various “experts” (AKA boyfriends) When I went to Ultimate Protection, I was rather nervous about what to expect because of this. But the owners of this establishment are very knowledgeable, and helped put my bad experiences into the past. I am now looking forward to future training at this facility, and learning the right and wrong ways of gun handling, shooting, and safety. This place is amazing! The instructors (Mary and Allen) are great and very informational when it comes to firearms and home protection. I recommend taking any one of there amazing training courses. I took the cpl class and left feeling confident and safe with my firearm. Out of all the various shooting ranges in the tri county area ultimate protection is by far the best!

I was fairly new to firearms and I wanted to do it right. So, I was driving by Groesbeck Hwy with my son and wanted to just check out Ultimate Protection Academy. When I came Mary, the director of training talked to me about available options and pretty soon I had my training with my son. I was impressed with this class which was conducted by Mary and Allan – professional approach, clear directions. The big part of the class was how to handle firearms safely which should be very important for any gun owners. After my first revolver training I took another two trainings with semiautomatic pistols. I became pretty confident with hand guns and also purchased one online with delivery to Ultimate Protection Academy. The transaction was flawless again, and I believe this is an option if you would like to save some money. If you have any questions about your new firearm Mary and Allen are there to help. Since I was new to firearms Mary gave me a few options what to purchase and it was a big help. Also, I enrolled my wife for the revolver class. She always has been resistant to firearms, but after the class she came home excited and told me she would like to come again to another class. Recently I took my CPL class. Wow what an experience. Again professionalism, clear explanations of the topics. Allen was giving the examples from real life situations and was answering all the questions. The practical part of the class was very engaging as well. The 8 hours passed quickly. Also, there were other instructors who were helping a lot. Mary and Allan, thank you for providing a wonderful place where every aspect of personal protection is considered. I strongly recommend Ultimate Protection Academy for people who want to do it right. You will learn or maybe refresh your skills. Every time I learned something new. One more thing, they do have a beautiful LEAD FREE fire range. It is another piece of mind if you are a health-conscious person.

This class was great for my CPL certificate. Although I am not new to shooting I still gained bits of information here and there from the minute I walked through the door. The trainers are very knowledgeable, entertaining, and treat everyone as family.

I took the CPL course October 2016, building was still under construction. Had a lot of fun despite the dust. Allen and Mary made the time fly by. I had such an enjoyable time, I volunteered for both classes the next day and have volunteered for almost every class since. I truly like\love that they focus as much on safety as they do on usage of the firearm. Done right, they are one. I have taken the hand gun retention course and am taking the lowlight course this month. Looking forward to taking more. I have a blast meeting all the fun people that come to the classes, looking forward to meeting more of them as well. I am totally in favor of having training before you can conceal carry, who wants an individual walking around with a hidden weapon that they may not know how to use properly or that may not be legally allowed to possess one. I have seem novices in the class room as well as experienced shooters, we all can use more training. We are talking about the possibility of one day having to draw our weapon to defend ourselves and take a life, it would be reassuring to know we have the training to harm that person and no one else. How could anyone advocate non-training, after harming an innocent! We cant go back after an event, we must be proactive!!! We have a regulated right to keep and bear arms, we also have three “unalienable rights” given to all human by the Creator “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” which the government was created to protect.

Please ignore some of the low ratings and rantings of the extreme folks on here claiming that Mary and Al (the AMAZING owners of the range) do not support citizens’ right to bear arms and that they only care about their bottom line. Clearly, they’ve never been to this range nor have they personally met the owners. Mary and Al are professionals that have devoted their lives to educating people of all ages on gun safety and rights, and their argument in having clear background checks and training for CPLs is completely sound. Would you want a mentally ill individual or a known felon to be able to walk into a store and buy a gun without being properly vetted? Would you feel safe knowing any ol’ person with zero training, safety, or understanding of how a gun works carrying around you or your loved ones? I sure wouldn’t. As gun owners and carriers, we may have rights but those come with responsibilities. Now, I just want to say what a fantastic place this is. I did my research and chose this range to learn how to shoot a handgun correctly because I wanted to put my self at ease and feel confident with my own abilities before I took the CPL class. I also knew I wanted a woman to teach me to shoot. Mary really knows how to make you feel at ease. Ladies, I can personally say that as an early-twenties woman with very little previous firearm experience, that I feel totally safe, very comfortable to ask questions and I never feel intimidated by the instructors or the gun I am using. Mary started me out on a little .22 revolver to a .22 semi and yesterday I shot a 9mm, so there’s definitely a good progression to develop your skills and keep you comfortable. There’s always a safety discussion during each lesson and each time I go I learn something new and it always makes me want to keep going back. The range is VERY nice and lead-free – a big bonus! I even drive 45 minutes to go to this range, because that’s how much I appreciate and value the expertise. One last bit – I can’t believe the change in myself after taking lessons here. I’m working on my fourth lesson at Ultimate and I am so much more confident with myself and how I can handle a firearm. Going in, I thought I’d only ever use a revolver but Mary (and shout out to the great range assistant) helped me prove to myself that I can rack and shoot that 9mm Glock like it’s nobody’s business! I do not and will not regret spending my time and money to develop this skill that is so important to my own safety. You will not be disappointed. 🙂

I took my first class with Al and Mary in January 2014 and have continued to increase my tactical skills with the classes they offer. Al and Mary are definitely pro 2nd amendment supporters and believe that everyone should be properly trained and know how to use a gun in every situation. I’m reading the negative reviews and can say that these people are nothing but trolls trying push their agenda. It is mandatory to have training and carry a license to operate a vehicle because it can be lethal in the hands of an untrained person. The same should hold true for hand guns. Proper gun knowledge and skills are necessary to ensure everyone’s safety! At Ultimate Protection Firearms Training and Gun Range, you will get that training and more!!!

The CPL class was informative and the newly built range is excellent. The instructors know the material and deliver it well. I am going to end up attending more training sessions to see the different scenarios and gain more knowledge from the different instructors available.

I took my first course with Al and Mary over four years ago (CPL). I was new to concealed carry, I did not know what to expect. I spent my life around law enforcement officers. As my uncle was a Detroit Police officer and many of my neighbors were police officers also. So I have had experience with guns, gun ranges and gun safety. I found their instruction invaluable. Their attention to detail was amazing. I learned so much more than expected. Since then I have taken most of the training courses offered by them. My wife and daughter has also taken many training courses too including women’s self defense. The courses I have taken are as follows: CPL Draw from the holster Deadly force AR rifle Gun cleaning (both handgun and AR rifle) Getting to Know your gun Handgun retention Taser Plus many private lessons This training has made me a much better target shooter and a expert on safe gun handeling and storage. The range located at 35965 Groesbeck Hwy in Clinton Twp, MI is a state of the art gun range. This is not only a well designed brand new facility in a recently remodeled building, but it is non-toxic or Lead Free. No other ranges in the area are Lead Free. Check that out for yourself on google. I highly recommend this facility for first time gun owners. No only is the instruction top notch but you are in a clean safe training environment that is also environmentally responsible. I believe in this training center and Al and Mary so much that I regularly volunteer at their range as an instructor. So in conclusion I highly recommend this company and Al and Mary for all your firearms training regardless of your skill set. You can always learn more, and this is the best place to do it at.

I took my CPL course spring of 2016 at U P A with Al & Mary. They are great people and awesome instructors! I have been volunteering at U P A ever since helping were needed during classes and as a RSO. I have known Al & Mary well over a year. Here is what I know about them: They are STRONG supporters of the 2nd amendment and gun rights. Al & Mary worked on getting the original CPL law passed. They provide professional gun safety training. They believe in what they are doing. Great instructors. They provide FFL transfers. They are GOOD people. just a thought: Our great military and police train all the time with firearms so they can be the best when duty calls. I really appreciated working with Mary and Al. They have taken their time with me and been patient as I work towards building my skills. I would say as well- as someone who is fairly liberal- that they are STRONG supporters of the 2nd Amendment so much so that they encouraged the people in my class to get their NRA membership. I believe that they want people who are knowledgeable about guns and gun safety more than they want to protect their bottom line as some reviewers have said on here. They also had past students come in to assist with their classes- which helps in gaining experience and knowledge from more than just a couple of people. It has been good to gain tips from these people as well! I will continue to use the Ultimate Protection Firearm Training Academy for my shooting skills building and would encourage anyone that is interested in responsible gun ownership to consider taking a class here.
